Sœur mineure de la syntaxe et de la sémantique, longtemps reléguée en marge de la linguistique, la pragmatique connaît de nos jours une véritable renaissance et un épanouissement extraordinaire. Il n'est cependant pas aisé de définir son domaine de recherche, à cause de sa position bien souvent inconfortable, à mi-chemin entre la philosophie du langage, la linguistique, la psychologie, la sociologie, l'ethnologie, la rhétorique.
